Maputo, Mozambique

Description

Created in 2005 with the aim of expanding the scene and professionalization of contemporary dance in Mozambique and the region, the International Platform for Contemporary Dance - KINANI promotes artistic creation, exchange between local and international artists, and the training of young professionals, positioning itself as a space of excellence for the development of performing arts and for the projection of Mozambique in the global artistic and cultural circuit.

Its biennial has made it the main event dedicated to contemporary dance in Mozambique and one of the unavoidable references in Southern Africa. This recognition was further reinforced during the 2015 and 2023 editions, when it hosted Danse l’Afrique Danse, currently known as the Biennale de la Danse en Afrique, the largest contemporary dance platform on the continent, a project implemented by the French Institute to support young creators on the continent and establish contacts with the most active actors in the sector.

KINANI serves as a meeting point for dance professionals, bringing together choreographers, companies, curators, festival and theater directors, sociocultural researchers, and programmers. In fact, KINANI demonstrates that it is possible to place Maputo at the center of research, experimentation, and artistic and cultural exchange projects between regions and continents.
