Bergen, Norway
Description
Bergen Internasjonale Teater (BIT) co-produces and presents Norwegian and international performing arts, and places particular emphasis on projects that stimulate international collaboration and work across artistic genres. BIT takes responsibility for highlighting the latest in dance, theatre and performance, including the facilitation of a relevant discourse program. With boldness and care, BIT paves the way for artists and projects that inspire and develop new perspectives, and challenge the boundaries of what performing arts can be and who they can reach.
BIT is the driving force behind the international performing arts festivals Oktoberdans and METEOR, as well as Dans – en fest!, a festival dedicated to works-in-progress in contemporary dance. BIT also hosts Prøverommet, an open platform for experimentation where artists test new ideas and material in front of a live audience, fostering risk-taking, dialogue, and artistic development.
After 18 years of operating without a permanent venue, Bergen Internasjonale Teater enters a new chapter in summer 2026. From autumn onwards, BIT will take residence in its purpose-built home, Sentralbadet Scenekunsthus, shared with Carte Blanche – The Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance.
This marks not just a relocation, but a significant expansion of possibilities – for artists, audiences, and the wider performing arts field. In the months leading up to the official opening in March 2027, BIT will gradually activate the building through a series of trial events and soft openings, inviting audiences to step inside, experience the space in progress, and take part in shaping its future.
